Ford's busjesgamma is als het heelal: het dijt constant verder uit. De hier geteste ster is de tweede in het gamma, waar verder de kleinere Courier, de grotere Custom en tot slot de 'echte' Transit stralen. Maar wacht eens, heb ik het nu over Transits? Dat is eigenlijk ongepast. Ford noemt de personen-Transits namelijk Tourneo en beschouwt deze Connect als alternatief voor de C-Max. En natuurlijk als tegenhanger van de Citroëns Berlingo Multispace en Peugeots Partner Tepee van deze wereld. Hoe deze als stoere personentransporter vermomde spullenverstouwer zich gedraagt? Ik test het voor je uit!
Ja, stoer is deze Ford Tourneo Connect zeker. De reacties die ik tijdens de testweek kreeg waren er vooral in de trant van 'wat een stoer ding'. Gezien de carrosserievorm verwachtte ik aanvankelijk meewarige reacties en bejaardengrappen, maar daarvan heb ik er geen gehoord. Een groot deel van deze waardering komt op het conto van de 17-inch wielen en de fraaie kleur 'Deep Impact Blue'. Aangezien deze velgen op de luxe Titanium-uitvoering maar 250 euro extra kosten heb je al snel zo'n dikke auto staan.

Alles kan mee
“Kan die doos ook nog mee?” vraagt een collega. “Zet hem er maar bij, de ruimte is oneindig”, antwoord ik. Natuurlijk, dat is 'ie niet, maar groot is de Tourneo Connect zeker. Daardoor kan je dat antwoord in negen van de tien gevallen veilig geven. Met 'alle zitplaatsen op hun plek' heb je maar liefst 1.029 liter bagageruimte tot je beschikking. Weliswaar gerekend tot aan het plafond, maar de laadlengte van bijna 92 cm is ook al riant. Klap je de bank om, dan ontstaat er een ruimte waarin je een fiets staand kan vervoeren. Til je de wat zware en onhandige bankdelen er helemaal uit, dan heb je zelfs 2.410 liter tot je beschikking. Fors, maar een Peugeot Partner Tepee is met 3.000 liter nog een stuk ruimer. Je kunt de banken natuurlijk ook omgeklapt laten staan, dan dien je ze te vergrendelen met stevige staanders die het beladen helaas behoorlijk belemmeren.
Gezien de carrosserievorm verwachtte ik aanvankelijk meewarige reacties en bejaardengrappen, maar daarvan heb ik er geen gehoord.
Achterpassagiers hebben evenmin reden tot klagen. De hoofdruimte is méér dan toereikend en ook de beenruimte is riant, zelfs voor bovengemiddeld lange personen. Door de hooggeplaatste voorstoelen kunnen je voeten er gemakkelijk onder, wat het comfort nog verder vergroot. Tot slot heb je ‘volwaardige’ elektrisch te openen ramen achter. Dat klinkt niet bijzonder, maar in de meeste 'busjes' krijg je klap- of schuiframen.
Net een echte Ford
Als bestuurder kijk je uit over een wel heel bekend dashboard, dat uitwisselbaar lijkt met dat van Focus, Fiesta en Kuga. Het belangrijkste verschil zit hem in het materiaalgebruik, dat in de Tourneo-lijn minder verfijnd is. Kortom: harde materialen, overal. Erg? Nee, wel erg handig, want met een vochtig doekje is alles zo weer schoon. Ook qua opbergruimte is de Tourneo Connect praktisch. Niet alleen vind je boven de zonnekleppen nog een ruim, wagenbreed vak: ook in de telleroverkapping schuilt een handig 'verborgen' vak met 12v-aansluiting. Erg handig om spullen uit het zicht te bewaren en een TomTom of telefoon op te laden. Een fabrieksnavigatiesysteem krijg je, zelfs op de Titanium, niet standaard. Voor 1.000 euro extra levert Ford het bekende systeem met het nog steeds wat te kleine 5 inch beeldscherm.
Achter het herkenbare Ford-stuur vind je snel een fijne zitpositie. Het stuur is zowel in hoogte als diepte ruim verstelbaar. Waar ik in de meeste auto's de stoel direct op de laagste stand zet, deed ik dit in de Tourneo Connect bewust niet. Deze auto vraagt echt om een wat hogere zitpositie. Storend is dat niet, want je zit juist prinsheerlijk en hebt lekker veel overzicht.

Recht(door) zo die gaat
Wat betreft 'rijdersauto's' heeft Ford een imago hoog te houden, een imago dat busjes op z’n zachtst gezegd iets minder hebben. Toch heeft het merk een heel aardige poging ondernomen om van de Tourneo Connect een goed rijdend apparaat te maken. In de rechte lijn werkt dat, want het onderstel voelt over het algemeen gedegen aan. Dat het in de basis bedoeld is om lading mee te nemen merk je op de snelweg. Je voelt dat de achteras iets te stevig is afgestemd waardoor de auto gaat 'hobbelen' als het wegdek iets minder goed is. Verkeersdrempels en ander groot ongemak vindt de Tourneo maar irritant: daarom filtert hij ze keurig voor je weg.
De driecilinder 1.0 EcoBoost met 100 pk heeft zijn weg ook naar de Tourneo Connect gevonden en presteert daar prima. De auto is met een 0-100 km/u-sprint van 14 seconden écht niet snel, maar wanneer je hem gemoedelijk rijdt zitten die niet al te vlotte prestaties je niet in de weg. Wel lastig is soepel wegrijden: vanwege het gretig toeren makende motorblok en het gevoelige gaspedaal geef je al snel teveel gas. Opvallend is de stilte waarmee de motor zijn werk doet. De rust aan boord is sowieso opvallend: op de snelweg hoor je slechts een beetje windgeruis, terwijl het blok een keurige 2.800 tpm maakt bij 120 km/u. In z'n zes, want in tegenstelling tot de Courier krijgt de Connect een zesversnellingsbak mee. Het testverbruik was met 1 op 13 zeer acceptabel voor zo'n grote auto.

Er doemen inmiddels bochten op: een plek waar een Ford zich in zijn element moet voelen. Zo niet deze Tourneo. Als je pusht haal je best hoge snelheden, maar het tovert in deze Ford geen grijns op je gezicht - daarvoor helt de koets wat te sterk over. Daarbij wordt het vertrouwenwekkende stuurgevoel teniet gedaan door het gebrek aan grip van de voorwielen. De Ford schuift maar al te graag weg, wat je vooral op nat wegdek merkt. Ook de tractie achteraan wordt dan fors minder: hier wordt de Tourneo slachtoffer van zijn gewichtsverdeling - achter heeft de Tourneo grote hoeveelheden glas en blik.
De Ford Tourneo Connect is aan te schaffen vanaf 21.900 euro. Daarmee is ‘ie na de verouderde Volkswagen Caddy Combi de goedkoopste auto in zijn segment, op de voet gevolgd door auto’s als de Citroën Berlingo Multispace, Peugeot Partner Tepee en Fiat Doblo. De testauto kost, in Titanium-uitvoering, 24.650 euro. Tel daar 1.000 euro voor een navigatiesysteem bij op en voor nog geen 26.000 euro heb je de 'dikste' Connect die je kunt krijgen. Tenzij je een automaat wilt, want die wordt alleen gekoppeld aan de 1.6 EcoBoost met 150 pk. Instapprijs? Maar liefst 35.535 euro!
Bang voor de buren
Interne concurrentie is er ook, de 'kaalste' Grand C-Max met de 100 pk sterke EcoBoost kost slechts 20.495 euro, maar die auto is enkel als kale Ambiente leverbaar. Eén niveau hoger krijg je 125 pk, maar ook direct een instapprijs van 24.995 euro. En dan is het maar net: wil je meer uitrusting en meer ruimte? Dan is die Tourneo Connect geknipt voor jou. Ben je toch bang voor de buren? Dan kun je het personenbusjessegment beter aan je voorbij laten gaan en de meer verfijnde Grand C-Max aanschaffen.
