De Ford rijdt leuker, maar ontspannen gaat beter in de Peugeot
Met de Puma doet Ford een derde poging om aansluiting te vinden binnen het segment kleine crossovers. Een rechtstreeks vergelijk met de hagelnieuwe Peugeot 2008 moet uitwijzen, of dat de Amerikanen nu inderdaad is gelukt.
Ruimte
De bagageruimte van de Ford is met minimaal 456- en maximaal 1.216 liter inhoud serieus groot. De achterpassagiers komen er bekaaider vanaf. Weliswaar is de wielbasis van de semi-terreinwagen 12 centimeter gegroeid ten opzichte van de Fiesta waarmee de crossover zijn bodemgroep deelt, maar wie langer is dan gemiddeld, zit met zijn kruin tegen het plafond en z’n knieën in de rug van de voorpassagier. Ook de Peugeot is gebaseerd op een kleine gezinsauto, in dit geval de 208. Nu is het huidige model niet bepaald een ruimtewonder, maar met dank aan een zes centimeter grotere wielbasis kun je achterin de 2008 heel aardig zitten. Ook lange passagiers hebben op de achterbank voldoende been- en hoofdruimte tot hun beschikking. De inhoud van de kofferbak bedraagt minimaal 405- en maximaal 1.467 liter. Dat zijn in dit deel van de markt nette waardes, zeker wanneer je bedenkt dat de Peugeot leverbaar is met een benzine-, diesel- of elektromotor. Er past evenveel bagage achterin, welke uitvoering je ook kiest.
Rijgedrag
Voor een hoge auto zit de nieuwe 2008 opvallend laag. Dat komt de rijbeleving ten goede, maar het bemoeilijkt de in- en uitstap. Je moet nadrukkelijk over de dorpel heen stappen om aan boord te komen. Dat lukt niet zonder met je schoenen contact te maken met de auto, waardoor er vieze vegen ontstaan. Zit je eenmaal, dan blijkt de cabine aan de smalle kant. Wie langer is dan gemiddeld, zit met zijn rechterbeen tegen de middenconsole ‘geplakt’. Uitgerekend op die plaats gebruiken de Fransen harde kunststoffen, waardoor een scherpe bocht al snel in een blauwe plek resulteert. Het helpt ook niet dat de stoelen klein zijn uitgevallen. Ben je 1.90 meter of langer, dan blijken zowel de zitting als de rugleuning te kort. De crossover deelt zijn bodemgroep zoals gezegd met de 208 en dat is goed nieuws, want die kleine gezinsauto hebben we leren kennen als een fijn sturende auto. De rijeigenschappen van de 2008 blijken eveneens dik in orde, al merk je dat er vanwege de hogere koets meer beweging in de carrosserie zit.
Vering en demping zijn over het algemeen comfortabel, maar de semi-terreinwagen heeft merkbaar moeite met korte oneffenheden. Onze testauto had een 130 pk en 230 Nm sterke driecilinder benzinemotor onder de kap, goed voor een trekgewicht van 1.200 kilogram. De krachtbron was in ons geval gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde zesversnellingsbak. Het is bij Franse auto’s altijd even afwachten hoe trefzeker de transmissie aanvoelt, maar bij deze Peugeot hadden we geen klachten. De driepitter is daarnaast aangenaam stil; eenmaal op snelheid hoor je eigenlijk alleen wat rijwind. De Puma is niet de zoveelste crossover, merkten wij tijdens onze kennismaking. Het onderstel van de Fiesta draagt in combinatie met de directe besturing en een heerlijke handbak zorg voor een aanstekelijke rijbeleving, waarvoor je bij de concurrentie (nog) niet terecht kunt. Wil je het een keertje rustig aan doen, dan heb je juist een slechte aan de Puma: zakt het toerental onder de 1.500 stuks, dan protesteert de krachtbron dusdanig luid, dat het motorgeluid door heel de auto resoneert. Dat is een rotgehoor.
Wij maakten onze testkilometers met de meest krachtige benzinemotor: een 155 pk sterke driecilinder, goed voor 190 Nm koppel en een trekgewicht van 1.100 kilogram. De driepitter laat zich sowieso goed horen, maar bij het vaart maken kun je die ronk nog als ‘sportief’ bestempelen. Onze Puma had het woordje ‘hybrid’ op de kofferklep staan: de benzinemotor krijgt ondersteuning van een kleine elektromotor, die assisteert bij het optrekken of accelereren. Ook slaat de Ford remenergie op. Dat is even wennen, want laat je het gaspedaal los, dan rolt de crossover dus niet uit maar remt af.
Consumptie
Vooralsnog levert Ford de Puma in ons land met twee benzinemotoren, allebei gekoppeld aan een elektrische startmotor. Het beschikbare vermogen loopt uiteen van 125- tot 155 pk. Voor de topversie waarmee wij op pad konden, geeft de fabrikant een verbruikscijfer op van 1 op 22,2. Wij kwamen in de praktijk tot 1 op 13,9.
Behalve de door ons gereden 130 pk uitvoering kun je bij Peugeot terecht voor twee andere benzineversies. En buiten de variant met een elektromotor wordt er ook nog gewoon een dieselmotor te koop aangeboden. Het beschikbare vermogen loopt uiteen van 100- tot 155 pk. Voor de testauto geven de Fransen een - optimistisch - verbruikscijfer op van 1 op 22,2. Wij realiseerden desalniettemin een score van 1 op 15,5, waarmee je in het dagelijks leven best tevreden mag zijn.
Veiligheid
Smaken verschillen, maar wij vonden de oorspronkelijke 2008 wat lullig ogen. Daar heeft dit nieuwe model geen last van, maar voor dat flitsende lijnenspel betaal je wel een prijs in de vorm van een matig zicht rondom. Gelukkig is de aanvullende veiligheidsuitrusting er ook op vooruit gegaan: voortaan beschikt iedere Peugeot van dit type over een noodstopsysteem, actieve rijstrookassistentie, verkeersbord- en vermoeidheidsherkenning. Het gaat dan overigens om uitgeklede versies van deze hulpsystemen. Zo remt de semi-terreinwagen niet automatisch voor voetgangers en fietsers: daarvoor is een meerprijs verschuldigd, net als voor adaptieve cruise control. Een achteruitrijcamera moet ook van de optielijst komen, maar is het overwegen waard: ben je meteen van alle dode hoeken af.
Bij Ford zouden we het kleinood ook bestellen, want het zicht rondom lijdt in de Puma evengoed onder het dynamische voorkomen. Standaard beschikt de Ford over een noodstopsysteem, actieve rijstrookassistentie en verkeersbordherkenning. Ook Local Hazard Information zit bij de vanafprijs inbegrepen. Dit nieuwe veiligheidssysteem stelt de Puma in staat om dankzij een draadloze internetverbinding vroegtijdig calamiteiten op de route door te geven. Fraaie techniek, maar er zit wel een addertje onder het gras. Het gaat namelijk om een abonnementsdienst en alleen het eerste jaar is gratis. Optioneel kun je de veiligheidsuitrusting van de crossover uitbreiden met adaptieve cruise control en dode hoek signalering.
Gebruiksgemak
Het grootste wapenfeit van de Puma is de bijzondere opbergruimte onderin de kofferbak. Het betreffende vak, door Ford aangeduid als Megabox, is verrassend diep, zodat je grotere voorwerpen rechtop kunt vervoeren. Stel dat je kiest voor een kamerplant, dan hoef je over wat gemorste aarde niet in te zitten: de ruimte is waterdicht en je vindt een stop onderin, zodat je dit deel van de kofferbak eenvoudig met de tuinslang kunt schoonspuiten.
De bagagebodem die dit handigheidje aan het zicht onttrekt, is ook nog eens in hoogte verstelbaar en maakt op die manier een vlakke laadvloer mogelijk. Verder vinden we in de kofferbak een stroompunt en twee haakjes voor de boodschappentassen. De achterklep kun je naar wens elektrisch laten uitvoeren; een voetbeweging volstaat om hem te openen. Fords nieuwste crossover heeft de primeur van een digitale klokkenwinkel, waarvan de mogelijkheden overigens beperkt zijn. In de huidige hoedanigheid is het in feite een veredelde boordcomputer: zo kun je bijvoorbeeld niet de navigatiekaart tussen je meters tevoorschijn toveren. Iets wat bij concurrerende fabrikanten wél tot de mogelijkheden behoort. Die kun je dan weer niet met massagestoelen (!) bestellen, of afritsbare bekleding voor wanneer er bij een bezoekje aan de drive-in per ongeluk frietsaus op de achterbank is beland. Beide zaken zijn overigens niet leverbaar op de door ons gereden ST-Line variant. De aankleding van het interieur is waar de 2008 zich onderscheidt van de concurrentie: ook deze Peugeot beschikt weer over de kenmerkende ‘i-Cockpit’, waarvan het welbevinden afhankelijk is van je lichaamsbouw. Om de meters te kunnen aflezen, moet je óver het kleine stuurtje kijken en van die afwijkende zit is niet iedereen gediend.
Tegen meerprijs kun je de 2008 laten uitrusten met een klokkenwinkel, die niet alleen digitaal maar ook driedimensionaal is uitgevoerd. De belangrijkste gegevens worden dan op de voorgrond geprojecteerd. Hoewel het er heel futuristisch uitziet, laat de bediening van al dat moois te wensen over. Fysieke knoppen ontbreken, dus zelfs voor het aanpassen van de temperatuur moet je een menu induiken. Achterpassagiers hebben twee stroompunten voor handen, maar een fatsoenlijke bekerhouder ontbreekt. Je moet het op de achterbank bovendien zonder ventilatieroosters stellen. De Peugeot voorziet wel in een verstelbare bagagebodem. Het instapmodel wordt trouwens zonder geleverd: de extra is voorbehouden aan duurdere uitrustingsniveau’s.
Prijs
Peugeot was er met de 2008 vroeg bij: zeven jaar geleden bestonden er nog nauwelijks kleine crossovers. De tweede generatie van het succesvolle model ondervindt aanmerkelijk meer concurrentie. Het verschuldigde prijskaartje is niet mals: instappen kan vanaf € 25.760.
Ford broedt al sinds 2013 op een gepast antwoord voor de Peugeot. Na de EcoSport en de Fiesta Active is deze Puma alweer de derde poging om het te maken in dit deel van de markt. Werd de badge eind jaren ‘90 nog op de kofferklep van een kleine sportwagen geplakt, nu prijkt de typenaam achterop een kleine semi-terreinwagen. Prijzen beginnen bij € 26.900, waarmee de Ford duurder is dan zijn rivalen uit eigen huis. De Amerikaanse semi-terreinwagen heeft vanaf de goedkoopste uitvoering een elektrische hulpmotor aan boord. Van de Peugeot bestaat er echter ook een volledig elektrische variant en dat is in dit segment evengoed bijzonder. De voordeligste e-2008 kost € 40.930.
Winnaar
Wanneer het om praktisch gebruiksgemak gaat, kun je niet om de Ford Puma heen. Het is bovendien de leukste crossover om mee te rijden; niet alleen in vergelijking met de Peugeot, maar ook met menig ander alternatief binnen dit segment. Daarmee hebben de Amerikanen eindelijk voet aan de grond in dit razend populaire deel van de markt. De prestatiedrang van de Ford is weliswaar leuk, maar de kleine crossover wil, dat je hem iedere rit opnieuw de sporen geeft. Je schakelt je wezenloos om die hinderlijke motordreun maar voor te blijven, en dat is best vermoeiend.
De Peugeot 2008 is wat dat betreft een comfortabeler metgezel en de auto beschikt standaard over een rijkere veiligheidsuitrusting. Bovendien biedt -ie de meeste ruimte op de achterbank. Dat de Fransman daarnaast iets voordeliger is, mag geen naam hebben: ten opzichte van de concurrentie zijn beide testkandidaten vrij kostbaar. Al die pluspunten bij elkaar leveren de Peugeot echter wel de winst op in dit duel.
